Just as I thought - a red buckeye, which has a few other common names, but from your photo I'm going to go with Aesculus x. carnea.
Does that earn me a seat beside you on the plane? I mean, you NEED me so that I can help identify plants, right? ;-)Kylee Baumlehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04288354709094515651noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2177210554306934304.post-43791093522066776382014-12-03T00:56:03.060-06:002014-12-03T00:56:03.060-06:00Oh my goodness gracious sakes a livin', Barbar...Oh my goodness gracious sakes a livin', Barbara! What GORGEOUS photos! You have really outdone yourself and you've made me completely envious of your trip! That's now on MY bucket list!

You unidentified blooming tree or shrub HAS to be a type of buckeye. It's SO very similar to both the Ohio buckeye and the red buckeye, I'm certain it's in the same genus. If I can find any definitive ID from your photo, I'll let you know, but this is just at first glance and my familiarity with them. Of course, I could be wrong too, but I don't think so.

May I go with you when you go back? ;-)Kylee Baumlehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04288354709094515651noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2177210554306934304.post-58823766154573625062014-12-02T23:43:31.611-06:002014-12-02T23:43:31.611-06:00Loree, you would probably get a big kick just hang...Loree, you would probably get a big kick just hanging out in our kitchen listening to the dialog with my sons. My favorite: about six years ago at dinner I asked the boys, "Does anyone know how to blog?" Dead silence. Then raucous laughter. They still can't get over their plant nerdy mommy's propensity for techiness. barbara wisehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03834134752021359282noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2177210554306934304.post-80723410250757131562014-12-02T23:35:19.601-06:002014-12-02T23:35:19.601-06:00Dear Anonymous, I'm trying to hunt down the fe...Dear Anonymous, I'm trying to hunt down the fern variety - I'll let you know as soon as I find out!
barbara wisehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03834134752021359282noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2177210554306934304.post-34449247458799291262014-12-02T11:20:43.849-06:002014-12-02T11:20:43.849-06:00Love that you shared your though process at the be...Love that you shared your though process at the beginning, I would have been thinking the same...you know if I had a kid.

Bring on the NZ photos!danger gardenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09227500551609537140noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2177210554306934304.post-15324541156402843962014-12-02T00:15:22.021-06:002014-12-02T00:15:22.021-06:00Do you happen to know the name of the fern you too...Do you happen to know the name of the fern you took the picture of in this post?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
